The steering system for the WR-17 is good but you have to be in the copit to work the steering. I am finding it challenging to get away from the dock and approaching the dock when you are sitting down. Is there away to handle the steering from the deck?
Also raising and lowering the sail when underway is an issue by yourself.
The waters in Maine have about 10 feet between low and high tide. This is very deceiving when the tide is going out. It can look like clear water for sailing only to find you are on top of a mussel bar with 10" of water and the tide is going out. All you can do is wait for the tide to come in to float off.
I would like to find a system to get away from the dock, raise and lower the sail, and come back to the dock single handed in tidal waters and crazy winds.

You can run a line from one side of the rudder head, up to the front aka (carabiner for running the line through, then continue the line across to other side via second carabiner, and back to the other side of the rudder head. Instant steering.
Next, install roller furling for the mainsail via Richard Ceballos’s method listed on this forum. That will help you take care of the main.
Have fun!

Many thanks on the rudder suggestion! So now I understand what Richard means by rotating boom. The videos are helpful.

Glad to help; several folks have rigged up connectors on top of the rudder head so you can attach a boat hook or other pole to use for steering. Not sure if any have posted pictures here, but again, Richard Ceballos has done it. He & I made the connector for mine; I just need to decide on the pole.
