The most common need for the shims are to prevent AKA clunk and tighten shrouds while sailing.
Also, can be positioned to prevent AKA tube wear while trailering.
When not needed they can slide outboard and stay on the AKA tubes.
Construction:
using 3" thin wall PVC.
cut (4ea) 3" lengths. (to make 4 shims)
remove a 1" wide semi circle (from the ends) leaving 5/8" width for a tang to be heated, with a heat gun, and bent up (see photo).
cut out 1/2" gaps (along the sides) for installation and removal. (see photo)
file edges smooth.
the shim area will be 2" wide and will have a 5/8" wide tang. the shim gap will be 1/2" wide.
Operation:
set up:
1. slide the amas out and lock.
2. set the mast on it's ball. do not raise yet.
3. slide all the shims into place, in the aka gaps. (see photo)
4. raise the mast.
take down:
1. lower the mast.
2. slide the shims to the rear of the aka tubes.
3. slide the amas in and lock.
4. slide the shims into the aka gaps. (for trailering)
note:
no need to remove the shims from the akas.
