For the WR17 mast rotation control may be an out of the box modification and not desired by the average. However, the mast is designed with an air foil to add sail area when trimmed via the mast limiter line and even more efficiently via mast rotation control lines.
Mast rotation control: (see pictures)
The yellow lines are the mast rotation controls. Setting the mast rotation inline with the mainsail increases the sail area by 10 sq ft (more speed). I am able to lock the lines via cam cleats at the pilot seat.
For the mast rotation control I made the hound from aluminum stock 1/4" thick 1" wide (bought it at local hardware). Bent it around a 1 1/2" pipe (in a vise) to start the curve, then a 2" pipe behind the first pipe.... and used C clamps to close the curve around the mast and long bolt finished the closure. The hound clamps around the mast (no holes through the mast).
Note:
Since the mast can be trimmed it will provide 10 sq ft that can sail a boat (bare pole) in heavy wind.
Also, I found that locking the mast to center while raising or lowering the sail will allow the mainsail luff to slide without binding (sail goes up much easier). I continue to use the mast rotation limiter line to limit the mast rotation when the mast rotation control is not in use. The rotation hound does not impede raising or lowering the mast.
