So I am trying stuff out in the driveway before I take it out in the lake. How do you keep the boat in irons while raising the main ( I don’t have a motor) I am also singlehanded.
Thanks

Anchor from the bow or tie to a mooring. Paddle to a lee with little wind.

This is an issue for a stock Windrider 17. You can modify your setup to be able to raise the sail from the rear cockpit:
1. Put sail slugs on your main. 2. Extend your halyard so it's long enough to raise from the rear cockpit. 3. Add a pivoting camcleat like a Ronstan RF5 and mount it near the mast base. 4. Run the halyard through the pivoting camcleat, and then to the rear cockpit. 5. Before leaving the dock, attach the halyard and prefeed the sail in far enough so that all of the slugs are in the track. 6. Use a Davis sailstop to hold the sail in the track.
This works best if you also have a topping lift. Lazy jacks are also nice, but you can use a bungy to hold the sail to the boom instead of lazy jacks.
This setup makes it easy to raise or lower your main under all conditions. On a windy day, it pretty much sucks to do it by yourself with a stock boat.

As ddcinc said, you can raise the mainsail from the pilot seat using a Ronstad RF5 swiveling cam cleat, as pictured. (scroll down)

I made an A frame for my Windrider17s.On the older windriders you attach to the tangs on the forward crossbeam. on the newer models the holes are not there so you make cuffs out of pvc to go around the fwd crossbeam use a rope to go between the two legs of the a frame to keep them from spreading apart. The apex of the a frame is pvc bent in half to slide over both legs a short piece of rope is attached here with loops so you can attach the fore stay on one side and a rope to the other side used to pull the mast up .i have even pulled the mast up by just pulling the a frame towards the front of the boat without the rope.It cost me about 8 dollars in material. Aluminum poles were bought at the recycling place 1 dollar a pound.I just had some PVC laying around.
