If the latch doesn't lock there is nothing that prevents the rudder from possibly falling out! If you have the joystick system then the control cable will prevent complete loss but it can still fall into the box and get jammed up. I had this happen recently and it was quite a struggle because the bungee on the kayak handle lift went through the plastic in the rudder box, so I was unable to lift it back out. So I was stuck with the rudder fully extended and a 15 knot on shore wind, not fun! luckily there was someone on shore to help. Had to take the rudder pins out and detach the box from the stern. Then unscrewed the plastic so we could get the rudder back up the box! Since I have a lift system for the rudder I got rid of the kayak handle and put a stop through the hole that is already there. I've previously posted the lift system. windrider.freeforums.net/post/254 Still needs some work as the line gets pulled on by the drag underwater, but much safer to pull on this and lift since you still have rudder control while remaining seated.
